Chapter Ten
Sadey stretched her legs, splaying her toes under the blanket, and reached for her favorite fuzzy body pillow. Only it wasn’t there. With a frown, she patted the empty space where her pillow should’ve been and eased her eye open, only to have a ray of sunlight annihilate her eyeball like a laser beam. “Jiminy cricket balls.”
A snort sounded from behind her.
Sadey stopped rubbing her watering eyes and flipped over off her stomach like a pancake, ready to fight whoever had broken into her bedroom.
It was Maris, sitting in a rocking chair, in the corner of a bedroom that was definitely not Sadey’s. Her bedroom was all purples, dreamy tulle drapes, and colorful pictures from her old life when she’d liked colorful things.
This room was rustic wood-panel walls, a wagon-wheel light fixture above her, no curtains, wood blinds that were wide open, a single black and white picture on the wall, and forest green sheets under a forest green comforter. Her floor was normally cluttered with clothes she couldn’t choose between, but this room was immaculate. Even the dust bunnies had abandoned ship here.
“Your—” Her sleep-filled gargoyle voice cracked, so Sadey cleared her throat and tried again. “Your room is very manly.”
Maris was wearing leggings, mismatched pink and blue socks, and an oversize gray sweatshirt hung off her shoulder. Her dark hair was wild. Down and wild. And her smile was genuine.
“At first when you started cursing, you said Jiminy cricket, and for a split second I judged you. Oh, lordy, I thought to myself, she doesn’t curse. But then you added balls.” Maris nodded deeply. “Well done. And this isn’t my room.”
“Whose is it?”
“Hunter’s. Pretty sure you’ve been kidnapped. I had to break in here to hang out with you, but don’t worry, he’s actually a good one.”
Sadey looked at the door that was closed with a chair shoved under the handle. “A good one who kidnaps people.”
“Meh. I know this all seems strange, but to our kind, it’s not that strange.”
“Our kind,” Sadey repeated softly.
“So I’m new to all this—”
“All what?”
Maris zipped her lips. “Can’t tell. If you break the rules, you get punished. At least that’s what Bryson and Wes told me. But they didn’t say anything about taking guesses. I guessed at what was happening here, and I didn’t get in any trouble. I mean, I got killed and my house was burned to the ground and blah-blah, but I was already on that path before I guessed, soooo…”
Sadey sat up, crossing her legs under the blanket, tugged at the oversize T-shirt someone had put on her, and straightened her spine. “Maris, you might as well be speaking a different language right now. Dumb it down, girl. My head is spinning.”
“What do you remember, and how long do you think you’ve been out?” Maris asked softly.
“I remember…” Sadey closed her eyes. She remembered everything in such vivid detail. Breakfast with Hunter. Every kind word he’d said. How he made her feel valuable. The ride on
